Download and Open
1) Download the Smoothping Software Bundle (Putty plus FreeCap)
NOTE: The 2 programs we use are both Freeware programs that have been in use all over the Internet for many years. If you are concerned that you may be installing a keylogger or anything like that, you can relax, we don't ask you to install any programs outside of these 2 Freeware, widely used open source programs.
Click Here to Download Smoothping.zip (837KB)
2) Extract the contents on to your Desktop. This will create a Folder called "smoothping" and also a shortcut called "Start Smoothping.bat". This will install the Putty and FreeCap programs that you will use to connect to the Smoothping service.
3) Click on "Start Smoothping.bat". Putty and FreeCap will now open.
Configure FreeCap
1) Click File -> Settings
2) Under Default Proxy, enter the following settings:
Server 127.0.0.1
Port 1080

Your settings screen should look like this
Click OK
3) Click File -> Settings. Click on the Program Tab, then:
- Check "Only one program instance".
- Uncheck "Run at System Startup".

Select WOW.exe and click open, then click okay
This will have created an icon within FreeCap called World of Warcraft. You can minimize FreeCap at this time (it will minimize to the System Tray.)
Configure Putty
The Putty configuration has already been taken care of and the correct settings should all load by default, including the latest list of the current Smoothping servers.
Run World of Warcraft
- Open Putty and you will see a list of all of the Smoothping
servers. Select the Server that you wish to connect to and Click
Open.
Note:
If the Smoothping Servers list does not show for you, you may need
to click the "Sessions from File" checkbox and you should then see
all the Smoothping Servers.
Pick your server from the list of servers (as Smoothping grows the list increases, so you will have more servers in your list than this screenshot) and then click okay
- Enter your Smoothping login and password. The very first time
you connect to each Smoothping Server, Putty will present a
security warning (picture below) asking if you are sure you wish
to connect to this server. Just select YES. Now you will be
connected to the server of your choiced and you should see our
welcome message. You can minimize Putty now (it will go to the
System Tray).
Security warning that opens the first time connected
Login to Putty. As you can see no password appears visually for security (although it is actually being entered - this often confuses first-time users of Putty). Hit ENTER on your keyboard, and Putty will login.
Success!
- Right Click on the FreeCap Icon in your System Tray (It looks
like a Blue and Pink Baseball Cap) and select World of Warcraft.
After a few moments, you will see the normal World of Warcraft
Login Screen. Login to WoW as per normal and start enjoying your
lower latency!
Troubleshooting:
Unable to Connect:
If after entering your WoW login and password into the WoW Client, you see the message "Unable to Connect. Please try again later", this means you have not configured FreeCap correctly. Please check to see if you have entered the correct Default Proxy and Port number. These should be 127.0.0.1 and Port 1080. Also confirm in Settings under DNS name resolving you have "Local then remote" selected.
Your PING has not changed or you are unsure if you have configured everything correctly.
There is a very easy way to test that the Smoothping service is working properly.
Firstly, connect to Smoothping via Putty by entering your Smoothping login and password. Next, using FreeCap, log in to the World of Warcraft character select screen. Now, right click on the Putty Icon in your System Tray, and select EXIT. Say YES, you are sure you wish to quit Putty. You should now be disconnected from WoW and kicked back to the WoW screen. This confirms you have correctly set up the Smoothping Service.
