Setting Up Smoothping on Mac

This quick tutorial will show you how to use the Smoothping service on the Mac.

There are only a few requirements to use Smoothping on the Mac.

There are 2 different ways that we know how to use Smoothping on the Mac: Wow2Go and Proxifier. We recomend you use Wow2Go but if it does not work, try Proxifier.

Wow2Go

Ok, let's get started. First, go to http://www.leapingbytes.com/wow2go/.

Download the application. Just click the Wow2Go icon, and it should download.

Wow2Go Website

PLEASE NOTE: WoW2Go is not a free program. You will need to sign up to receive a free 15-day trial license. After your 15-day license expires, you must register to continue using WoW2Go or you will be disconnected every 15 minutes, despite whether or not you have a paid subscriber account with Smoothping.

Once you have downloaded the application, you will need to enter your name and email address to get your 15-Day trial license. You will receive this attached in an email addressed to you.

Once you receive the email, download and open the attachment. Wow2Go should open.

Click the small plus + sign to add a New Configuration (Profile).

Wow2Go Application

Enter the Smoothping server you wish to connect to (dallas01.smoothping.com is shown as an example), plus your Smoothping user name (all lower-case; i.e., "user" not "User") and your password. Please note that your password is case-sensitive (i.e.; "PASSword" is different than "passWORD").

Wow2Go Configuration

Now, click the Wow2Go icon in the left hand corner. A window will slide out asking where your World Of Warcraft.app is.

More Wow2Go Configuration

That's it! Now just click "Start" and then "Play", and WoW should open using the Smoothping service. Enjoy!

PLEASE NOTE: Smoothping is not affiliated with Leaping Bytes Software, the producer of WoW2Go. If you have a problem with connecting to a specific Smoothping server, please address this issue with Smoothping. ALL OTHER ISSUES must be directed to Leaping Bytes Software.

Proxifier

First, download Proxifier from http://www.proxifier.com/mac_download.htm

Proxifier Website

Proxifier is Shareware, you get a 31-day trial licence

Proxifier Installer

Install proxifier and then download the Smoothping configuration settings HERE. Just open the configuration settings and Proxifier will open.

Next, open up Terminal, which is located in /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app. You can quickly launch it using spotlight by typing in "Terminal".

Now to create the connection to our secure shell network. Let's assume your user name is "smooth" and you were connecting to our server in The Netherlands. You would type in the following:

ssh -D1080 smooth@netherlands01.smoothping.com

Remember, your user name is all lower-case - "smooth", not "Smooth".

Terminal

You will them be prompted to enter your password (case-sensitive). Once submitted, you will be connected.

Terminal Connection

Now, all you need to do is open Proxifier, launch WoW, and can enjoy the lower ping Smoothping can offer.

Bad Connection?

For most overseas players, it's common to see Ping times of 400ms or more. Some players in far away places are even dealing with Ping times of more than 1000ms!. By using the Smoothping service, most people see their latency times lowered by 50-70%. So if you normally play with 600ms, you might see as low as 210-230ms!

PVP Player?

Having the absolute lowest ping possible is critical in PvP. If you have 300ms and you are facing off against someone with 50ms, you are at a HUGE disadvantage. When your opponent does something, it will take around 300ms for you to even see it. When you respond, it takes around 300ms for it to get back to the WoW server. That's more than half a second disadvantage compared to your opponent.

Hardcore Raider?

If you are a serious raider, having the lowest Ping and the most stable connection possible is essential. It's no secret that having a lower ping will increase your DPS. Even going from 200ms down to 85ms will make a difference as your rotations become tighter and more accurate. Heals will fire a fraction quicker! But most importantly, no more disconnects during laggy boss fights.
